The More the Merrier – 20/52

I was so excited when I heard the theme for this week’s 52 on Friday photo because I knew I had the perfect two subjects scheduled for a session last Saturday. This week’s theme is “The More the Merrier” and the challenge was to capture multiple pets in the same photo. The best advice I can give for photographing multiple pets together is be sure to have patience, patience, and more patience!

Of course, it helps to have two dogs who are as cute as Armando and Belle. It’s hard to take a bad photo of faces this adorable! This was the very last photo I took during their session. See what I mean about being patient? I just knew the right moment would come.

Ok, one more of the two of them just because I can’t resist. Check back early next week for more photos of these two sweeties. I’m dying to share!

Digital Darkroom – 18/52

This week’s 52 on Friday theme, “Digital Darkroom,” is a chance to show off some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating the perfect photo. With all the rain we’ve had this week, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to take any new photos outside. As soon as I saw a break in the rain, I ran outside to grab a quick portrait of Iris so I could share a “before and after” this week.

I shoot all of my photos in RAW, which means that the camera doesn’t apply any adjustments to the image beforehand. RAW gives me more flexibility and complete creative control over the end result, but because there aren’t any adjustments applied by the camera, I think the original RAW file (on the left) always looks a little bland. After a little editing, I end up with something much brighter!

In addition to brightening up the image and adjusting the color and contrast, I always remove distracting elements such as leashes. Almost all of the dogs you see on my photos were actually on leash, but the leash was removed during editing. Safety is the most important thing! Living with a herding dog who would love to chase cars if given the opportunity, I never like to take chances.

Colors of Spring – 17/52

Spring is in full swing here in northern Massachusetts! Since this week’s 52 on Friday theme is “Colors of the Season,” I was more than happy to head outside to find some spring colors. I think Iris was pretty happy to spend some time outside too.

From the Ground Up – 16/53

This week’s 52 on Friday theme is “From the Ground Up.” Since most people tend to shoot from the pet’s eye level or above, this week’s challenge was to shoot from down low.

We’ve been having some gorgeous weather this week, so here’s Iris looking particularly regal while she enjoys the sunshine. I hope you and your pets have been out enjoying the sunshine too!

My Favorite Things – 15/52

This week’s 52 on Friday theme is “My Favorite Things.” The challenge was to show our pet’s favorite thing, whatever that may be! Iris doesn’t have too many objects that she loves. She doesn’t play with a lot of toys (even though she owns plenty)! Her kong is always a favorite, which we saw a few weeks ago. She’s my little girl, so she has a whole variety of leashes and collars, although I suspect I enjoy picking out different leashes more than she does. She just wants to GO and it doesn’t matter to her what she’s wearing!

But Iris is a girl who enjoys her comfort. A few days ago, I left the room for a few minutes after folding up the newly-washed blankets and leaving them on the couch. This is what I found when I came back. I think it’s pretty obvious what Iris’ favorite thing is!

She loves pillows and blankets, bed and couches. Why would she ever sleep on the floor when there’s a perfectly good couch? What a life!
